  • PATCHWORK IDENTITY: PORTFOLIO
Was formt unsere Identität, was beeinflusst sie?

    2014 | Buch | Hardcover | Fadenheftung | 21 x 14,8 cm | 152 Seiten

  • PATCHWORK IDENTITY: PORTFOLIO
    2020 | brochure | softcover | stapled | 21 x 10,5 cm | 40 pages
With this selection of portraits I want to give an insight into my PATCHWORK IDENTITY project. I am guided by questions about human identity.
What shapes our identity, what influences it? What makes us as human beings unique and unmistakable? What roles do we play in different areas of life? What self-image do we have of ourselves? How do we want to be seen? In which way is our gender important for us? How do we attribute identity when we meet other people? What are the layers of human identity?
Within my project PATCHWORK IDENTITY I portray people in an artistic way and take up questions like these. By superimposing layers in the picture I give expression to the complexity of human identity and thus allow the viewer to participate in my encounter with people and my subjective view of the people portrayed.

For sure, you are familiar with the most obvious famous places in London: Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, London Eye or Hyde Park. But have you ever noticed the number of construction sites in London? You find them all over the city; you can spot them from the top of St. Paul’s, the Shard or other viewing points. The cranes are an integral part of the London skyline. You can’t ignore them or the construction noise. The construction sites are visually and acoustically omnipresent. Without them London wouldn’t be that vibrant city with its development, change and modern architecture many of us know and discuss.
Usually the construction sites are screened by wooden fences, typically with information on it: pictures of the building that is being built or a description of the project. Sometimes it’s possible to glance inside through a window or a hole in the fence. Then you can discover what happens in the protected area, the men who work there, the different construction machines they use, the materials.
With my photo-project ‘London Construction Sites’ I will offer you this special insight through a peephole in the fence. I’ve spotted them out over 5 months in 2015 (March to July). You can share my fascination for this part of life in London.

  • SEE WITH ONE'S OWN EYES
    2014 | book | hardcover | thread stitching | 21 x 14,8 cm | 152 pages
The photo book Mit eigenen Augen sehen (Seeing with your own eyes) shows abstract and experimental photographs by Beate C. Koehler. The photographer takes everyday, often inconspicuous things and presents them to the viewer in an unexpected way: A house wall weathered over the years evokes associations with a modern painting; horizontally arranged lines in blue and white tones stimulate the imagination and give rise to puzzles. An exciting tour of discovery is therefore guaranteed.
12 rows of 5 photographs each are presented. The connecting element of the selected pictures are forms and structures. But colours also play a decisive role in the composition and arrangement.
